Why can't i hold a connection to the internet?

so i took my computer over to a crowded chicago apartment where i'll be staying for a bit and i'm having trouble holding a connection to the wireless signal. i've noticed that the signal is unsecured, could it be that too many people are leeching off of the internet and that's why i can't stay on?
